American Association of University Women
These fellowships support women doctoral candidates completing dissertations and scholars seeking funds for postdoctoral research leave or for preparing completed research for publication. Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents.
American Council of Learned Societies
Mellon / ACLS Dissertation Completion Fellowships exist to assist graduate students in the humanities and related social sciences in the last year of PhD dissertation writing. This program aims to encourage timely completion of the PhD. Applicants must be prepared to complete their dissertations within the period of their fellowship tenure or shortly thereafter.
American Educational Research Association
The AERA Grants Program provides small grants and training for researchers who conduct studies of education policy and practice using quantitative methods and including the analysis of data from the large-scale data-sets sponsored by the NCES and NSF.
ASHE / Lumina Foundation
The Lumina Foundation has provided ASHE with funding for fellowships in the amount of $14,000 to support dissertation research on the broad topics of financial aid, student retention and success, and adult learners and learning. The fellowships will support up to one year of activity that will be conducted through the students’ home universities and can be used to support costs of supplying data, dissemination of project results, travel, tuition, and salary for the fellows. A critical component of the fellowship program is professional development and mentoring of fellows. To that end, fellows are assigned an established scholar as a mentor in the program, participate in an online community of scholars, and come together twice during the fellowship year —during an ASHE pre-conference session in November and in a summer colloquium at the end of the fellowship year— to participate in an intergenerational group dedicated to promoting innovative scholarship on student access and success.
Association for Institutional Research
The Charles I Brown and Cameron Fincher Fellowship Awards recognize outstanding dissertation proposals. The dissertation fellowship program provides funds to doctoral students beginning their dissertation. The program supports research on postsecondary education using the NCES and NSF national databases or research studies that increase the understanding and knowledge of student decisions in postsecondary education.
Council on Library and Information Resources
The Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) is offers fellowships funded by The Andrew W Mellon Foundation for dissertation research in the humanities in original sources. The purposes of this fellowship program are to: help junior scholars in the humanities and related social-science fields gain skill and creativity in developing knowledge from original sources; enable dissertation writers to do research wherever relevant sources may be, rather than just where financial support is available; encourage more extensive and innovative uses of original sources in libraries, archives, museums, historical societies, and related repositories in the US and abroad; and provide insight from the viewpoint of doctoral candidates into how scholarly resources can be developed for access most helpfully in the future.
Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation
The Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation (HFG) welcomes proposals from any of the natural and social sciences and the humanities that promise to increase understanding of the causes, manifestations, and control of violence, aggression, and dominance. Highest priority is given to research that can increase understanding and amelioration of urgent problems of violence, aggression, and dominance in the modern world.
International Research and Exchanges Board
IREX’s Individual Advanced Research Opportunities (IARO) program seeks to attract, select, and support in-depth field research by US students, scholars and experts in policy-relevant subject areas related to Southeast Europe and Eurasia, as well as to disseminate knowledge about these regions to a wide network of constituents in the United States and abroad. The IARO Program provides fellows with the means and support necessary to conduct in-country research on contemporary political, economic, historical, or cultural developments relevant to US foreign policy. The IARO Program plays a vital role in supporting the emergence of a dedicated and knowledgeable cadre of US scholars and experts who can enrich the U.S. understanding of developments in Southeast Europe and Eurasia.
Institute of International Education
The US Student Fulbright Program is sponsored by the US Department of State. It is the largest US international exchange program offering opportunities for students, scholars, and professionals to undertake international graduate study, advanced research, university teaching, and teaching in elementary and secondary schools worldwide.
National Research Council
The Ford Foundation Diversity Fellowships seek to increase the diversity of the nation’s college and university faculties by increasing their ethnic and racial diversity, to maximize the educational benefits of diversity, and to increase the number of professors who can and will use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students.
Social Science Research Council
The International Dissertation Research Fellowship (IDRF) program supports distinguished graduate students in the humanities and social sciences conducting dissertation research outside the United States. The IDRF program is committed to scholarship that advances knowledge about non-US cultures and societies grounded in empirical and site-specific research (involving fieldwork, research in archival or manuscript collections, or quantitative data collection.) The program promotes research that is at once located in a specific discipline and geographical region and engaged with interdisciplinary and cross-regional perspectives.
Spencer Foundation
The Dissertation Fellowship Program seeks to encourage a new generation of scholars from a wide range of disciplines and professional fields to undertake research relevant to the improvement of education. These $25,000 fellowships support individuals whose dissertations show potential for bringing fresh and constructive perspectives to the history, theory, or practice of formal or informal education anywhere in the world.
Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation
The Charlotte W Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellowships are designed to encourage original and significant study of ethical or religious values in all fields of the humanities and social sciences, and particularly to help PhD candidates in these fields complete their dissertation work in a timely manner. In addition to topics in religious studies or in ethics (philosophical or religious), dissertations appropriate to the Newcombe Fellowship competition might explore the ethical implications of foreign policy, the values influencing political decisions, the moral codes of other cultures, and religious or ethical issues reflected in history or literature. Women’s Studies Fellowships support the final year of dissertation writing for PhD candidates in the humanities and social sciences whose work addresses topics of women and gender in interdisciplinary and original ways.
