GAANN Fellowship Program

In 2009, the Departments of Mathematics, Computer Science and Engineering, and Physics in partnership with the Office of Graduate Studies, received $1.4 million in federal grants from the US Department of Education through the Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need (GAANN) Fellowship Program. This program supports exceptional doctoral students who demonstrate financial need in fields deemed critical to the US.

The GAANN Fellowship Program provides fellowship grants to support U.S. citizens and permanent residents as they pursue their doctoral degrees. GAANN Fellows receive a generous stipend: up to $30,000 per calendar year, depending on individual need as determined by the FAFSA, plus educational expenses to cover tuition and fees, professional travel and some supplies.

To be eligible for consideration, you must:

  1. Be enrolled full time in (or admitted to) a doctoral (or doctoral bound) program offered in Computer Science and Engineering, Mathematics, or Physics;
  2. Be a US citizen or permanent resident, or a permanent resident of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands;
  3. Be committed to a career in university teaching and/or research;
  4. Have an outstanding undergraduate and (if applicable) graduate academic record;
  5. Complete the online FAFSA and have demonstrated financial need as determined according to federal guidelines.
